How to Uninstall an Android Emulator on Mac Without Leaving Gigabytes Behind

Updated on · The MACOS EMULATOR team

For most Mac apps, uninstalling means dragging the icon to the Trash. For an Android emulator, that leaves most of it in place: the engine, the Android system and the device, several gigabytes stored outside the app. Here is how to remove MACOS EMULATOR completely, what to do first, and what is left afterward.

Why the Trash is not enough

The app you dragged into Applications is only the launcher. Everything it downloads and creates afterward lives elsewhere, in your user folder, in ~/Library/Application Support: the emulation engine (about 3.5 GB), the Android system, the device with your games, and your configuration. Throwing the app away leaves all of that on your disk.

That is why the launcher has its own Uninstall button: one click removes everything, and you never have to go looking for a hidden folder.

Before you uninstall: three checks

  • Uninstalling because something is not working? Send your logs to support first (Settings, then Logs, then Copy) and paste them with the “Send a report” button in your customer area. Uninstall erases them along with everything else, and after that, there is nothing left to read.
  • Your license key: nothing to write down. It stays in your customer area, with a “Copy the key” button.
  • Your subscription: Uninstall does not cancel it. You cancel in your customer area, with “Cancel subscription”, and you keep access until the end of the current period. A lifetime license has nothing to cancel.

Uninstall in three clicks

  1. 1In the launcher, open Settings: the gear icon, at the top right.
  2. 2Scroll all the way down to the “Uninstall” card and click “Uninstall…”.
  3. 3The launcher asks you to confirm: “Uninstall MACOS EMULATOR?”. Click “Uninstall and quit”.

It first stops the device and the engine, so that nothing keeps running in the background, then erases its data, moves the app to the Trash and quits. Erasing several gigabytes takes a few seconds.

What Uninstall removes

  • The emulation engine and the Android system.
  • The Android device, with the installed games and your Google session on the device.
  • Your configuration, your key mapping and the license key saved on this Mac.
  • The launcher’s logs and leftover downloads.
  • Data from an older version of the app, if any is left, a small hidden file the engine leaves in your home folder, and the app’s preferences in macOS.

In Full mode, the app installs the game from Google Play, with your own Google account. That account is not deleted: only its session on the device disappears.

The data does not go through the Trash: it is erased directly, which is why the launcher’s confirmation ends with “This cannot be undone.” Only the app goes to the Trash.

What is left afterward, and what to do with it

  • The Accessibility permission. Uninstall does not touch macOS permissions, and the app’s line can stay in the list. To remove it, go to System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Accessibility, select the app and click the minus button (−) below the list.
  • The downloaded DMG file, if it is still in Downloads, and any other copy of the app: only the copy that was running goes to the Trash. Throw the others away yourself.
  • Your license: it stays valid, and your Mac keeps its seat.

If macOS refuses to move the app to the Trash

This can happen, for example, when the app was installed from an administrator account and your own account is not one. The launcher does not quit silently: it tells you that your data has been deleted and asks you to drag “MACOS EMULATOR” from Applications to the Trash to finish. Nothing else is left.

Already threw the app away by hand?

Then the gigabytes are still on your disk. The safest route is to go back through the button: take the app back out of the Trash, or download it again from your customer area (“Download the app”), open it, then go to Settings and Uninstall. You do not need a key for that: the launcher only asks for it to install or launch a game, and the gear icon stays available.

Reinstalling later

Your key stays valid and your Mac gets the same seat back: the launcher asks for the key again the first time you click “Install” or “Play”, and you copy it again from your customer area. Everything else has to be redone: the engine to download again (about 3.5 GB), the Accessibility permission and, in Full mode, the sign-in to your Google account, then your games and your keys. The emulator installation guide walks through every step.

Moving to another Mac?

Uninstalling does not free up your license: one license covers one Mac, and this Mac keeps its seat even once it has been emptied. To activate the emulator on another Mac, click “Switch Mac” in your customer area, then paste your key on the new one.

Just want to get disk space back?

Uninstalling is not the right move to win back a few gigabytes. In Settings, Engine and storage, “Free up space” removes Android systems that no device uses and leftover downloads, without touching your device, your games or your key. The guide to an emulator’s disk space breaks down how much each part takes up.

Frequently asked questions

Is dragging the emulator to the Trash enough to uninstall it?

No. The app is only the launcher: the engine, the Android device and your configuration stay in your user folder, several gigabytes of them. Go through Settings, then Uninstall, which removes everything and moves the app to the Trash.

Is my license key still valid after I uninstall?

Yes. Uninstall erases the copy saved on your Mac, not your license. If you reinstall, copy it again from your customer area: your Mac gets the same seat back.

Does uninstalling the emulator cancel my subscription?

No. You cancel in your customer area, with “Cancel subscription”. You keep access until the end of the current period, then your key is deactivated.

My subscription has ended. Can I still uninstall?

Yes. Uninstall does not ask for a key: open the launcher, click the gear icon, then Uninstall, at the very bottom of Settings.

Why does the app still show up in Accessibility?

Because Uninstall does not touch macOS permissions. Remove it from the list in System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Accessibility, with the minus button (−).
