Android Emulator on Mac: How to Play with Keyboard and Mouse
Updated on · The MACOS EMULATOR team
A mobile game is drawn for a thumb: buttons placed on the screen, which you tap. In an Android emulator on a Mac, those buttons become areas you click and, above all, keys on your keyboard. That is keymapping: binding a key to a precise spot on the screen, so you stop hunting for the button with your eyes in the middle of a match.
How a key press becomes a touch
When you press a bound key, the emulator sends the game a touch at the position you chose. The game receives an ordinary touch, just like one from a finger, and it is not modified: only your finger changes shape.
Positions are stored as fractions of the screen rather than in pixels. A key placed in the middle of the screen stays in the middle, whether you play in a window, full screen or on an external monitor: your profile survives a change of resolution.
Placing your keys in MACOS EMULATOR
- 1Open the key editor: the keyboard icon at the top right of the launcher.
- 2Drag a marker onto the game button you want to control.
- 3Click inside the marker to choose its key, or on the cross to remove it. Everything saves on its own.
- 4While playing, the keyboard button in the toolbar turns your keys on or off, and the eye icon shows or hides them on screen.
You can fix your mapping on the fly, mid-match, without restarting the emulator.
Choosing your keys: a few principles
- Keep your left hand on a compact block. On a QWERTY keyboard, that means around Q, W, E, R, A, S, D and F: you never have to look down.
- Give neighboring keys to actions you chain often, and move away the ones that would cost you dearly if pressed by mistake.
- Avoid shortcuts macOS keeps for itself, such as Cmd+Tab or Cmd+Space.
- If your password contains letters bound to buttons, turn your keys off with the keyboard button in the toolbar while you sign in, then turn them back on.
Why the emulator needs the Accessibility permission in macOS
To receive your key presses while the emulator has focus, the launcher needs the Accessibility permission. Without it, two things break without any message: your keys stop responding, and a right click is read by Android as “back”, which kicks you out of your match.
- 1Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Accessibility.
- 2Turn the app on. If your keys ever stop responding, turn it off and back on.
- 3Keep a single copy of the app on your Mac: the permission only applies to one.
- 4When the game starts, give the permission a minute to take effect before using your keys.
Mouse or trackpad?
Both work: a click becomes a tap, a drag becomes a finger swipe. The trackpad is enough for games where you click and move things calmly. A mouse becomes more comfortable as soon as gestures get fast and repetitive, and it is easier on the wrist over a long session. Either way, it is the keyboard keys that save you the most time.

Frequently asked questions
Does my mapping survive a change of resolution?
Yes. Positions are kept as fractions of the screen, not in pixels: switching from a window to full screen, or to an external monitor, does not move a single key.
My keys no longer respond at all in the emulator. What should I do?
It is almost always the Accessibility permission. Go to System Settings, Privacy & Security, Accessibility: turn the app off and back on, and check that there is only one copy of it on your Mac.
Why does a right click make me leave the match?
Without the Accessibility permission, Android reads the right click as the back button. Once the permission is granted, a right click no longer takes you out of the game.
Is playing with a keyboard in an emulator allowed?
That depends on each game’s rules, not on the Mac. A bound key only replaces your finger, one action at a time. Still, read your game’s terms, especially about macros.
Can I change a key in the middle of a match?
Yes. The editor opens during the match, and the change applies right away, without restarting the game.
